The Fundamentals of Palliative Care Programme | Ngā Tūāpapa o te Pairuri Tāngata is an End-of-Life course designed for registered and non-registered healthcare professionals caring for people with a palliative care need.

Utilising a holistic approach, this blended learning programme increases palliative care knowledge, assessments and outcomes for people in your care, and their whānau; as well as yourself and other healthcare workers. 

 

This programme consists of 4 e-learning prerequisite topics:

  1. Essence of Palliative Care – a foundation module focusing on what palliative care is, who is involved, and cultural considerations.
  2. The Palliative Care Approach – a module on understanding how ethics, communication and spirituality can improve your ability to support those receiving care.
  3. Managing Pain and Long-Term Illness – a 2-part module covering recognizing pain and helping people through it; basic pharmacology; and the challenges faced by those with chronic illness and dementia.
  4. Care and Support at the End of Life – a module on the last days of life, loss and grief, and caring for all involve.

Following this is a full day in-person workshop with shared learning and networking within peer support group, and a reflective learning opportunity. An optional online half-day session covering Symptom Control and Pharmacology follows directly from this workshop further enhancing End of Life care skills for all who attend. We strongly recommend this second day for clinical professionals.

Time:

  • Day 1 - 7.5 hours (8.30am - 4pm)
  • Day 2 (Optional day most suited to those who are involved with pharmacology) – 3 hours (9 – 12 pm)

  • Day 1 – HWA Learning Centre, 206 Swanson Road, Henderson.
  • Day 2 – Online (Zoom).
